The Gujarat High Court on Friday directed the Ahmedabad Hospital and Nursing Association to ensure that fire safety norms are being followed strictly and those who fail to do it should close down their hospitals.
The division bench of Gujarat High Court directed the state government and municipal corporation to deal strictly with owners of buildings, factories, schools, and hospitals who violate fire safety norms.
The court said the hospitals and schools cannot function at the cost of people’s life. Also, the court rejected a submission to restart the Shrey Hospital in Ahmedabad.
What court said about fire safety?
The court expressed concern over the fact that more than 50,000 buildings in the state have failed to follow fire safety norms. Earlier, the division bench of Gujarat High Court directed the AMC to file an affidavit regarding the compliance with the direction issued by the court on December 15, last year.
The court had also said that 151 hospitals have 4 weeks to obtain valid Fire NOC and comply with the directions issued by the court.
There are a total of 2,249 hospitals in Ahmedabad. A public notice was issued by the AMC on December 21, to all these hospitals to obtain fire NOC within 15 days of the notice.
A PIL was filed in Gujarat High Court regarding the non-compliance of fire NOC rules by several hospitals after the fire incident in Shrey COVID hospital last year.
