The nationwide spike comes after thousands attended a large religious gathering in south Delhi’s Nizamuddin last month.

The gathering at the Markaz Nizamuddin, the Delhi office of Islamic sect Tablighi Jamaat, has been linked to over 130 cases and seven deaths.

In total, 2,371 members of the group have been identified in different states, the government has said. Testing and isolation of some of these members is ongoing and a search is on for others who have dispersed across the country.

Worldwide the virus has infected over 9.3 lakh people and killed nearly 50,000.
