Hathras gangrape: Rahul, Priyanka to visit village again, media allowed to meet family

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have decided to go to Hathras on Saturday afternoon in a second attempt to meet the family of the woman who was allegedly brutally gangraped by four upper-caste men. The woman died earlier this week in Delhi.

Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday alleged that the Yogi Adityanath government was threatening the family of the Hathras gang-rape victim and called the UP government as ‘morally corrupt’.

Top UP govt officials rush to meet family

Earlier in the day, top officials of the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government rushed to meet the family members of the Dalit woman.

The government had clamped prohibitory orders in the village after her body was brought for cremation, restricting access of people to the victim’s family members.

UP’s Director General of Police HC Awasthi will also visit Hathras amid reports of poor handling of the case.

Media allowed to meet family

On Saturday officials said they have allowed media to enter the village and meet the victim’s family. Officials had prohibitory orders were imposed as the SIT was in the village investigating the case.

“The SIT probe in the village is complete and so we have lifted the restrictions on the entry of media,” Prem Prakash Meena, Sadar senior divisional magistrate, was quoted by channels.

As to whether Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi will be allowed to meet the victims he said so far the orders are only to allow the media and not any other delegations. He also denied reports that phones of family members were taken away and they were confined to their homes.

Smriti Irani calls Rahul’s visit politics

Union women and child development minister Smriti Irani on Saturday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Hathras was for politics and not for justice.

Her comments came after she was asked the question while addressing a press conference in Varanasi on farm bills.

Hathras gang-rape case history

A 19-year-old woman was attacked on September 14 at Hathras village. She told the cops that she was dragged by her dupatta into the fields where she had been cutting grass. The family later found her in the fields, naked and bleeding, with injuries on her neck and back.

She suffered multiple fractures, paralysis and a deep gash in her tongue in the assault. The injuries to her neck left her paralysed and struggling to breathe, media reports said. Her family has alleged that the police did not help them initially and only reacted after public outrage over the incident.

UP police denied that her tongue was cut off and said she bit her tongue when her attackers were trying to strangle her. The UP police initially registered an attempt to murder case but added rape charges only after the woman’s formal statement. They have denied the family’s allegation of slow response.

The victim’s family alleged that the body was cremated by the police in a hurry in the dead of the night and the family and relatives were not allowed to have a last look.

Meanwhile, the UP had on Thursday also claimed that no rape had happened, citing a forensic report.
