Hardik Patel gets bail in Vastral councillor attack case

A city sessions court on Monday granted bail to Congress leader and former convener of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), Hardik Patel, in connection with an FIR lodged against him by Ramol police in 2017.

Hardik was arrested on March 20 from Tankara in Saurashtra where he had gone to attend a court proceeding. A metropolitan court denied him bail the next day and he was sent to judicial custody in the Ramol case.

As per the case details, Hardik is facing a case of rioting in Ramol police station after he along with 56 others were booked for an alleged attack on the house of Vastral councillor Paresh Patel. He had obtained anticipatory bail in the case on the condition that he cannot enter the jurisdiction area of Ramol police during the pendency of the case.

An arrest warrant was issued against him by the metropolitan court after he skipped the court hearing on February 5.

Hardik’s counsel said he avoided the court hearing as he feared an arrest in the 2015 FIR registered against him at Vastrapur police station for sedition and inciting violence during the Patidar agitation. In his bid to avoid arrest, he skipped the hearing in the sedition case and an arrest warrant was issued by a city sessions court on February 7. Hardik, however, was successful in getting an interim protection against this warrant from the Supreme Court.
