Cyclonic storm Gulab weakens into deep depression: IMD


Bhubaneswar: The cyclonic storn ‘Gulab’ has weakened into a deep depression, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday morning. The system is likely to weaken further, the weather department has said.

The cyclonic storm over north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha moved westward with a speed of 14 kmph, weakening into a deep depression, said the IMD bulletin.  It lay centred over north Andhra Pradesh early on Monday.

Meanwhile, Gulab brought heavy rain to parts of Andhra Pradesh. Rescue operations were undertaken in NDRF, APSDMA, police in places hit hard by the cyclone. Vishakhapatnam was inundated by very heavy rainfall, with relief centres set up across the district.

The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, south Chhatisgarh, Telangana and Vidarbha on Monday.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea for next 12 hours.

Tamil Nadu and Kerala are also likely to get some rain because of Gulab.

Ahead of the landfall, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured Andhra Pradesh and Odisha of all help.
