Gujarat’s coronavirus case tally nearing 500-mark, death toll increases to 23


Gujarat has reported 25 fresh cases of coronavirus in the last 12-hours ending at 10 am on Sunday taking the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 493 in the state.

After three deaths on Saturday, one more death was reported from Ahmedabad on Sunday that pushed the state’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 23. A 75-year-old man died in LG Hospital in Ahmedabad due to coronavirus. Hospital sources said the septuagenarian was suffering from hypertension.

Out of the 25 new cases, 23 cases are of Ahmedabad alone, whereas two fresh cases have been reported from Anand.

With the addition of the 23 fresh cases on Sunday, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Ahmedabad has increased to 266—the highest in Gujarat. The city has also reported the maximum number of deaths in the state. After the single death reported on Sunday, the death toll due to the deadly virus has increased to 11 in Ahmedabad.

Apart from the 266 COVID-19 cases reported from Ahmedabad so far, Vadodara has reported 95 cases, followed by Surat with 28 cases and Bhavnagar with 23 cases. Rajkot has reported 18 cases, whereas the capital city of Gandhinagar reported 15 cases and Patan reported 14 cases. Bharuch has reported eight cases, whereas the coastal district of Porbandar and the tribal district of Chhota Udepur have each reported three cases.

Anand has reported seven cases and Kutch has reported four cases. The districts of Mehsana and Gir-Somnath have each reported two cases, whereas Panchmahals, Jamnagar, Morbi, Sabarkantha, and Dahod have each reported one case.

According to the Health Department, out of the total cases, four people are in a critical state and put on ventilator support, 422 people are stable, 44 people have been discharged, and 23 have died. Information made available by the department also provides that 428 cases out of the total 493 are incidents of local transmission, 33 people have a history of international travel, and 32 have a history of inter-state travel.

As far as deaths are concerned, apart from the 11 deaths reported in Ahmedabad, four deaths have been reported from the diamond city of Surat, two deaths have been reported each from Bhavnagar and Vadodara, and one death each has been reported from Gandhinagar, Jamnagar, Panchmahals, and Patan. Out of the 23 deaths, three had a history of international travel, three had a history of inter-state travel, and the rest 17 cases were incidents of local transmission.

So far, 15,561 people have been placed under quarantine.
