AMC polls: Will govt give an extension or appoint an administrator before Dec 14?

When does the term of the present administration of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation come to end? There seems to be a bit of suspense about the same.

The AMC’s present administration’s term will come to an end on December 14 while the corporators have already been in power for five years. In 2015, the corporators were elected on December 2 and by that calculation, their five-year term has come to an end.

The present mayor was appointed on December 14, 2015, and the term will end this year on the same date. It remains to be seen whether the present administration will be given an extension as a caretaker or an administrator will be appointed for the same.

The Gujarat Election Commission had in October postponed the municipal and panchayat elections due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The commission in a release had said given the “exceptional times” holding of polls would result in the diversion of state administration machinery currently engaged in containing the outbreak.

Elections to six municipal corporations, including Ahmedabad, 55 municipalities, 31 district panchayats, and 231 taluka panchayats were to be held in November since their five-year terms would end in the second week of December.

Corporators in the know said the government will come out with a notification on December 12 or after that. They believe the current administration can get a three-month extension.

If the state decides to appoint an administrator, corporators will not have any say in the AMC’s running as long as the next election is not held. In the 2015 elections, 142 BJP corporators and 49 Congress corporators had won from various wards of the city.
