Gujarat government shielding drug, liquor mafia, says Rahul Gandhi

Ahmedabad: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused the Gujarat government of protecting the drug and liquor mafia. The accusation comes in the wake of large drug seizures in the state and less than a week after around 40 people died after consuming spurious liquor in Botad and Ahmedabad districts in Gujarat.

Noting that drugs worth Rs 21,875 crore have been seized from the Mundra port in three large hauls since September last year, the Congress leader asked who in the double engine government, incidentally a phrase popularised by the ruling BJP, is constantly providing protection to the drug and liquor mafia in the state.

“Why are the youth of Gujarat being forced into drugs?” he asked in a tweet in Hindi.

In another tweet, the MP from Wayanad seat in Kerala asked how despite the seizure of drugs thrice, drugs continue to land at the same port.

“Is the law and order situation in Gujarat finished? Does the mafia have no fear of the law? Or is this the government of mafias?” Gandhi wrote on the microblogging site.

His sister and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also took to Twitter to attack the BJP government in the state.

“Drugs worth Rs. 22,000 crores have been seized from the same port in Gujarat in three cases. The media is silent, the government is lethargic, and all agencies of the government are silent,” she wrote.

She alleged that the mafia is distributing drugs throughout the country right under the BJP government’s nose, and wondered if the law and order management is helpless or in connivance with the mafia.

Several large drug seizures have been made in Gujarat in recent months as drug cartels increasingly use the Arabian Sea route to smuggle drugs originating from Afghanistan and Iran into India. Despite a prohibition policy, liquor is also widely available in the state.
