The Gujarat Police on Wednesday said it has identified and quarantined 71 of the 72 people from the state who participated in the religious gathering of the Tablighi Jamaat in New Delhi.

During a media briefing on Wednesday, director general of police (DGP) Shivanand Jha said none of those quarantined have shown any coronavirus symptoms so far. Of the total tally, 34 persons are from Ahmedabad, 20 from Bhavnagar of which one person has died due to COVID-19, 12 are from Mehsana, four people are from Botad and two are from Navsari.

The top cop said a broad list of people who were present in the Nizamuddin area of Delhi was received by Gujarat Police on the basis of technical surveillance. However, all those persons named in the list might not have participated in the religious gathering.

In a related incident, a police team in Gomtipur area of eastern Ahmedabad had to face stone pelting when it was searching for two people who present in the Nizamuddin area of Delhi during the religious congregation of the Tablighi Jamaat.

Meanwhile, the Gujarat High Court on Wednesday directed the state government and the Centre to provide details of the persons who took part in the religious congregation of the Tablighi Jamaat and later entered Gujarat. The court has also asked the governments to clarify the steps taken to contain the spread of coronavirus from such persons and the punitive action taken against them.
