Vismay Shah moves Gujarat High Court, seeks parole for 60 days

Vastrapur hit and run accused Vimsay Shah has moved the Gujarat High Court seeking parole for 60 days as his wife is pregnant and he wants to attend some rituals concerning the same. Gujarat High Court has issued notice to the state government in the petition seeking parole. The matter is likely to be heard next week.

Vismay Shah case

Earlier the Gujarat High Court had in February upheld a lower court’s conviction in the 2015 hit and run case. It however gave Shah six weeks to surrender before prison authorities and to approach the Supreme Court for relief.

In April the High Court gave him more time to surrender as his lawyer told the high court that Shah’s case could not be heard in Supreme Court due to the COVID pandemic.

The Supreme Court turned down his appeal against his conviction and asked him to surrender before the jail authorities.

In August 2020, Vismay Shah then surrendered to jail authorities to serve his remaining jail term.

Vismay Shah had also come into controversy when he and his wife were allegedly caught boozing in a farmhouse near Adalaj in December 2018 when out on bail.

After the incident, the court had asked him to do social service. He served in an orphanage and old age home for six months.

In 2013, Shah was involved in a hit-and-run case in which two youth Shivam Dave and Rahul Patel were hit by his speeding BMW.

Two years later, Shah was sentenced to five years in jail and fined Rs31,000. He challenged the conviction in the high court which also imposed an additional fine of Rs2 lakh on him.

Shah, in the meantime, entered into a compromise with the victims’ families and they did not demand harsher punishment.
