UP’s love jihad law comes into force from today

Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Saturday gave her nod for an ordinance against forcible religious conversions, media reports said.

The ordinance- The Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020 – was passed by the state cabinet earlier this week.

The ordinance allows for up to 10 years in jail for forcible or “dishonest” religious conversions including those for the sake of marriage. As per the ordinance, a marriage will be declared “null and void” if the conversion of a woman is solely for that purpose.

Those wishing to change their religion after marriage also need to apply to the district magistrate.

Several BJP-run states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh have come up with a law to prevent the conversion of Hindu women to Islam who according to them are trapped for conversion through love affairs.

Party leaders have termed the trend ‘love jihad’.

Why only love jihad why not ordinance for unemployment: Akhilesh Yadav

Soon after the ordinance against love jihad came into force in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav said his party will oppose the ordinance in the assembly.

“Instead of this, bring an ordinance for the procurement for farmers’ for employment for youth,” Akhilesh said.

Samajwadi Party MP from Moradabad ST Hasan called the love jihad ordinance a political stunt and asked Muslim men to consider Hindu women as ‘their sister’.

Hasan told the media that people choose their life partners irrespective of their religion and that in most cases of interfaith marriages the partners were aware of each other’s religion. He said all those cases of so-called love jihad were those in which one or both families of the couple opposed the match and made allegations against each other.

He advised Muslim youth to consider Hindu women as their sisters and not to get lured into love as the law could get them into trouble.
