CBI Court discharges Tarun Barot, another cop in Sadiq Jamal encounter case


Aaquib Chhipa, Ahmedabad: The Special CBI Court on Saturday discharged ex-DySP Tarun Barot and another cop, Chatrasinh Chudasama in the Sadiq Jamal encounter case of 2003.
The investigating agency CBI opposed the discharge application filed by the retired DySP (Deputy Superintendent of Police) Tarun Barot and another policeman Chhatrasinh Chudasama before the CBI Court seeking discharge in the case.

The CBI submitted before the court that there is enough evidence against the accused ex-policemen. The chargeframe process is pending since 2012 in this case. CBI also placed petrol bills of Tarun Barot’s visit to Mumbai and a statement of witnesses who visited Mumbai along with him.

In all eight policemen are accused in the case, of which one has died whereas the other two were recently discharged by the court.

What the accused in Sadik Jamal encounter case argued

The discharge application moved by Tarun Barot stated that he is innocent and has been falsely implicated in the case. There is no single direct statement against Barot except the fact that he visited Mumbai between Jan 2 to 4 in 2003.

Earlier a Special CBI Court in Ahmedabad discharged two policemen – RL Mavani and Ajaypal Yadav in the Sadiq Jamal encounter

The court while discharging the two policemen – RL Mavani and Ajaypal Yadav – observed that there is no sufficient ground for proceedings against them.

There is no ground for presuming that these applicants have committed the offence. This is the first case of policemen getting exonerated in the case that involves police from Mumbai and Gujarat.

Earlier, the CBI had argued that Sadiq was not a terrorist but a victim. Ajaypal Yadav retired a few months back, while Mavani is DySp in Vyara, South Gujarat.

What is the Sadiq Jamal case?

Earlier on the order of Gujarat High Court, the CBI probed the case in which Sadiq Jamal was allegedly killed by eight policemen including JG Parmar, Tarun Barot, I.A. Saiyed, and others in a fake encounter case.

In January 2003, Sadiq Jamal was killed near Naroda by policemen posted with the Detection of Crime Branch, Ahmedabad. It is alleged that Sadiq Jamal had come to Ahmedabad to kill then Gujarat Chief Minister- Narendra Modi to avenge the 2002 riots
