The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday expressed shock over the viral video of BJP leader Kanti Gamit’s grand daughter’s engagement ceremony where a large number of people assembled sans mask and social distancing.
Gujarat High Court questioned the state as to why officials ranging from the district superintendent of police to the constables were not answerable for the gathering.
“What was the district SP doing when such sort of programme was being organised. How could the SP permit such gatherings,” Justice JB Pardiwala questioned.
The court also remarked that the man in question had the audacity to say that he had invited only 2,000 people. The court said the damage is done and all the efforts put by the state have gone in vain thanks to such acts.
What state said about engagement video
Government pleader submitted before the court that an FIR has been lodged in the matter and various sections of breach of notification, social gathering, etc have been invoked in the FIR.
Interestingly, the state had earlier in a submission said that as a preventative measure to reduce COVID infection it has reduced the number of participants in marriages from 200 to 100.
Earlier, BJP high command including CR Patil and Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had asked party members to avoid conducting rallies and social gatherings.
