Surat Police does a U-turn on masks, says violators will have to pay a fine

Within 24 hours of the Surat Police department announcing that it will give masks to those found violating the mask rule, the department said violators will still have to pay the fine. Earlier the cops had said the violators would get masks instead of a fine.

City police commissioner Ajay Tomar said the department will not compromise on the issue of masks and that violators will have to cough up a fine. “People who won’t wear a mask will be fined. The message here is that everyone needs to wear the mask and if everyone does it then there is no need to penalize anyone,” said Tomar.

He urged citizens to wear a mask as it was the best defense against the disease and the department was not willing to compromise on the issue. It should be noted that as Surat registered a rise in cases, the police commissioner had held a meeting with BJP MP CR Patil and Surat Municipal Commissioner, and others and it was decided that they would follow the no fine, wear a mask policy.
