Surat among Indian cities with low positivity rate, recovery rate also surges

After seeing a surge in COVID cases for some months during the second wave, Diamond City Surat recorded just two COVID fatalities in the last 24 hours. In fact, for the last one week and more, the city has been recording deaths in single digits. Earlier during April and May, it had seen over 2000 cases per day but now has cases under 200.

In fact, given the drop in cases, the 32 COVID care centres are seeing fewer patients. 28 COVID care centers have been shut down owing to a drop in patients.

Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials said that Surat was among the cities in the country with the lowest positive rate. The city had a positive rate of 0.7% and a recovery rate of 96%.

Earlier the 108 emergency services in the city received 340 cases of COVID calls which has also dropped down considerably. The city at the height of the pandemic saw the use of 220 metric tonnes of oxygen which has now come down to 20 metric tonnes.

Surat’s colour-coded health cards for COVID

The SMC also introduced three color-coded health cards for grocers, vendors, drivers, and other people who have the potential to be super spreaders.

The green card means a cardholder has been vaccinated against COVID-19 with one or both doses. Those who have not been vaccinated or tested for the virus would be given white health cards.

It said weekly COVID 19 tests will not be mandatory for green health card-holders. The city has issued 89,000 white and 10,000 green cards so far. Surat on Sunday recorded 139 cases and 326 recoveries in the last 24 hours. It vaccinated 20,738 people in the last 24 hours.
