As Gujarat gears up for the civic body polls, there is a buzz that veteran leader Shankersinh Vaghela may rejoin the Congress. If the buzz is to be believed, Congress leader Bharatsinh Solanki is negotiating to ensure Vaghela’s return. The high command may approve of his reentry.
Shankersinh Vaghela has been part of Gujarat’s politics for over four decades. He began as an active RSS member and then was part of the BJP where he contributed to the expansion of the party in Gujarat.
He was the general secretary of the BJP from 1980 to 1991.
In 1995, BJP came to power with 121 seats, and Kehsubhai Patel was made the chief minister which annoyed Shankersinh Vaghela.
He left the BJP and later formed a party called the Rashtriya Janta Party (RJP) with several of his supporters in BJP but they later rejoined the Saffron Party.
He later joined hands with Congress but left the party ahead of the 2017 assembly elections in the state.
He then formed the Janvikas Party which performed poorly in the elections. He then joined the NCP in 2019 ahead of the Lok Sabha polls but later left that too.
