CBI Court discharges 2 policemen in Sadiq Jamal encounter case


A Special CBI Court in Ahmedabad on Tuesday discharged two policemen involved in the Sadiq Jamal Mehtar fake encounter case of 2003.

The court while discharging the two said policemen – RL Mavani and Ajaypal Yadav observed that, there is no sufficient ground for proceedings against them.

There is no ground for presuming that these applicants have committed the offence. This is the first case of policemen getting exonerated in the case that involves police from Mumbai and Gujarat.

Earlier, the CBI had argued that Sadiq was not a terrorist but a victim. Ajaypal Yadav retired a few months back, while Mavani is DySp in Vyara,
South Gujarat.

What is the Sadiq Jamal case?

Earlier on the order of Gujarat High Court, the CBI probed the case in which Sadiq Jamal was allegedly killed by eight policemen including JG Parmar, Tarun Barot, I.A. Saiyed, and others in a fake encounter case.

In January 2003, Sadiq Jamal was killed near Naroda by policemen posted with the Detection of Crime Branch, Ahmedabad. It is alleged that Sadiq Jamal had come to Ahmedabad to kill then Gujarat Chief Minister- Narendra Modi to avenge the 2002 riots
