Pirana-Pipdaj fire: NGT slaps unit owner Rs5 crore

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has slapped a fine of Rs5 crore on Sahil Enterprises in Nanubhai estate in the Pirana Pipdaj fire incident where a blast ended up killing 12 people and injuring several others.

The blast had happened due to the chemical stored in the warehouse of the textile unit. The NGT in an order has asked the owner of Sahil Enterprise to pay the Rs5 crore fine failing which the state has been ordered to confiscate their property.

A six-member committee headed by a former judge of the high court will also investigate the matter. The NGT has also asked the chief secretary to take appropriate action against those responsible.

The injured have to be paid a compensation of Rs5 lakh while the fine of Rs5 crore is to be deposited within 10 days.

It has also asked that action be taken against those responsible for letting the factory run its operations illegally sans any permission. Narol police have registered a case against those responsible for the chemical blast.

A complaint was filed against owner of Revabhia Estate Pradip Bharwad, Nanubhai Estate owner Nanu Bharwad and Sahil Enterprise owner Hetal Sutariya.

The complaint was filed by Ashish Christian, 30 a resident of Ranipur village who lives in Shanti Master slums.
Christian’s mother Raniben was among those who worked at the unit.

What is the Pirana-Pipdaj fire incident?

A fire in a textile factory in Nanubhai Estate in Pirana-Pipdaj trapped 14 people killing 12 of them. Of the total deceased seven are men and five are women. T

The fire led to a blast due to the chemical stored there which also brought down the structure trapping 14 people inside. Six fire tenders were been rushed to the spot. Later NDRF was also pressed into action and 21 people were rescued. 10 people were injured in the incident.

Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani announced a compensation of Rs4 lakh each for the deceased who died in the Pirana cloth factory fire incident on Wednesday.
