As per day COVID cases in Ahmedabad rise, the AMC has decided to close down paan shops in the city until the situation improves. AMC has downed the shutters of paan shops and also tea stalls in a bid to control the spread of COVID.
The Solid Waste Management Department of the AMC sent teams in all seven zones to close the shops. The sudden step by the civic body also led to altercations as many shop owners resisted the same. The AMC argues that paan shops attract a crowd and it aggravates the COVID situation.
Paan shops voluntarily closed on weekends
The Gujarat Pan Masala Association on Friday decided to shut paan shops across the state on Saturday and Sunday. The decision came close on the heels of paan shops in Rajkot deciding not to function on weekends. The decision has been taken given the surge in the COVID cases in the state.
Earlier, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had appealed to the people to opt for voluntary lockdown. His appeal came after a visit to Morbi ann Rajkot. Both places have been witnessing a surge in cases. He appealed to people to avoid going out and said the night curfew in 20 cities was extended to prevent people from going out during the summer which is often the norm in the state.
On Tuesday the Gujarat government decided to increase the curfew timings in 20 cities of Gujarat. The new curfew timings was effective from 8 pm to 6 am and will be implemented till April 30.
COVID cases in Gujarat reached a whopping 4,541 cases per day in the last 24 hours while 2,280 patients were discharged during the same period. Forty two deaths due to the disease were recorded in 24 hours in the state.
