The Gujarat government has announced that the night curfew which is in place in four cities of Gujarat will continue until January 31. The night curfew which was extended last time was to come to an end today.
Gujarat chief minister on a visit to Jamnagar said that the night curfew in four cities of the state – Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, and Vadodara, will continue till January 31.
Night curfew background
The Gujarat government, which had imposed a curfew from 9 pm to 6 am in the four major cities of Gujarat, had on December 30 announced new curfew timings.
The state said from January 1, 2021, onwards, the curfew in the four major cities of Gujarat will be effective from 10 pm to 6 am. The new curfew timings were to be in place up to January 14.
The change in timings was announced after a representation by hotels and restaurants to the CMO that the curfew was impacting their business.
The state had earlier imposed a 57-hour curfew in Ahmedabad to prevent the surge of the crowd during the weekend. Later it also announced a night curfew for Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot.
The night curfew that was first imposed was to come to an end on December 8 but it was extended until further notice. The government imposed a night curfew in four cities to help curb the surge in COVID cases post-Diwali.
Those who are part of essential services including milk and medicine shops were allowed to function during curfew timings. Passengers travelling by railways or flight are also allowed to travel by road to reach the railway station or airport during the curfew timing.
