Aaquib Chhipa, Ahmedabad: Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu’s son Narayan Sai, who is serving life imprisonment in a rape case, has moved the Gujarat High Court seeking interim bail of 10 days to meet his parents. The matter is likely to be heard on December 2.

Advocate Rafik Lokhandwala representing the petitioner Narayan Sai filed an application before the Gujarat High Court stating that the petitioner has not met his father Asaram Bapu, who is serving life imprisonment in Jodhpur Jail, for the last seven years.

It further stated that Asaram Bapu, 87, is the spiritual guru of Narayan Sai and he needs to meet him for the fulfilment of his spiritual sadhana as well as for the love and affection he has for his father.

The petition states that the Surat Sessions Court had directed jail authorities to arrange a meeting between Narayan Sai and his father if it was feasible as per jail manual but the jail authorities had failed to do so.

Narayan Sai’s mother Mataji Laxmidevi Harpalani, 77, is completely bedridden and requires supplemental oxygen support at home, the petition says. Hence, as his only son, the petitioner Narayan Sai should be allowed to meet her. It further said that he has not met her for the last five years.

The petition said Narayan Sai’s mother is being treated at home right now due to low immunity and being in the high-risk category due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The petition further added that Narayan Sai being the only son of his parents wishes to extend a helping hand to them during the family crisis and wants to spend quality time to assist and comfort them.

Narayan Sai has not been in touch with his parents for a long time and this has caused him great mental torment and remorse which is in turn affecting his health, the petition states.

It further argues that on humanitarian grounds, the treatment of prisoners should not emphasize their exclusion from familial and community life.

The petitioner has not been able to meet his parents due to legal and health issues for a very long time. Considering such a distressing and adverse situation in their family, the petitioner should be granted interim bail, the petition added.

What is the case against Narayan Sai and Asaram Bapu?

Asaram Bapu is lodged in a prison in Jodhpur in Rajasthan after the high court there convicted him of sexual assault on a minor. Another case against him in Gujarat is under trial in Gandhinagar Court.

Narayan Sai was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Surat sessions court in a rape case filed by two sisters in two different complaints against him and his father. The younger of the two sisters had accused Narayan Sai of sexually assaulting her when she was a resident at their Surat Ashram between 2002 and 2005.
