The Gujarat government has declared Mucormycosis a notifiable disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897. The state in a tweet said that all government and private health facilities will have to follow ICMR guidelines for screening, diagnosis, treatment.
Hospitals will also have to mandatorily report all suspected & confirmed cases to the government of India and the respective state government.
The decision to declare it as a pandemic was taken at a core committee meeting of the Gujarat government.
The decision comes after the Union government directed all states to declare the fungal infection an epidemic and list it under the Epidemic Diseases Act. States such as Rajasthan and Telangana have already declared the rare but fatal fungal infection as epidemic.
Declaration of disease as epidemic essentially means that all conformed or suspected cases of the disease anywhere in India will have to be reported to the state government and the Union health ministry.
