The Motera cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, the largest in the world, will now be known as the Narendra Modi stadium. The stadium which was inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind ahead of India vs England 3rd Test on Wednesday was renamed on the same day.
The stadium can seat 1,32,000 spectators. But in line with the COVID-19 notifications, only 55,000 fans will be allowed to watch it live.
Earlier Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju and BCCI secretary Jay Shah had visited the Motera stadium to check it ahead of its inauguration.
It was built at an estimated cost of Rs800 crore the Motera Stadium is spread over 63 acres.
“The total area is equivalent to 32 Olympic size soccer fields put together,” a statement from the Press Information Bureau said.
The stadium was closed for renovation in 2015.
