  • Paid vaccination at a private hospital is being encouraged by the Centre to increase overall vaccination coverage
  • Private hospitals buy vaccines directly from the Centre
  • Paid vaccination to help those who can afford it and those who need it on an urgent basis

Health secretary Jayanti Ravi on Thursday said the paid vaccination offered by Apollo Hospital is part of the Centre’s norms to allow private hospitals to offer COVID vaccination on a chargeable basis.

It should be noted that COVID vaccination for those in the 18 to 44 age group began in the state from May 1 onwards. Until now, the facility was available at government centres for free. The 18 to 44 age group COVID vaccination facility was available at 10 cities in Gujarat including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Kutch, and Bharuch.

Ravi clarified that the paid vaccination being offered in Ahmedabad by Apollo Hospital is an additional facility in addition to the free vaccination being offered in the 18 to 44 age group by the government facilities.

The vaccine doses are procured directly by the hospital from the manufacturer. The paid vaccination is voluntary and is aimed at those who can afford it and for those who may need the vaccine on an urgent basis and don’t want to wait to get a slot.

Ravi clarified that paid vaccination is an additional facility provided for citizens completely in line with the guidelines issued by the Centre

She further added that the paid vaccination drive will also be strengthened in the state in addition to the free vaccination drive.
