A local court in Junagadh has sentenced Congress MLA Bhikhabhai Joshi and his three sons to one year in jail. They were also fined Rs5000 in connection with a case in which they injured a man who refused to pay election expenses in 2008.
The court observed that the prime accused is a sitting MLA and despite this, they entered the house of a person with a weapon and injured him.
“This sort of act shouldn’t be taken lightly,” the court said.
Although the court has granted interim bail to MLA Bhikhabhai Joshi and others so that they can challenge the order before a higher court.
After the verdict, MLA Bhikhabhai Joshi said he respect’s the court’s order but will challenge it before the higher court. He further said that an old man in his village died and his son was made the sarpanch of the village. But the son began to harm my political career, he said.
The MLA is found guilty of injuring a man after he refused to pay an election expense of Rs 15,000 in 2008.
MLA Bhikhabhai Jhas asked the victim to pay for his election expense. When the victim refused the MLA along with his sons visited his house with weapons and injured him.
After the incident, an FIR was registered against the MLA and his sons at Mendrana Police Station. Based on this a criminal case was filed against the MLA in the court.
