Union Home Minister Amit Shah will reach Ahmedabad on Wednesday evening. Reports said the minister is in the city to celebrate Uttarayan with his family. He will also attend a meeting of the Somnath Trust scheduled for later.
Every year, the top BJP leader celebrates the festival with party workers but this time due to the notification issued by the state government, sources said Amit Shah will celebrate the festival with his family. The notification prevents outsiders from taking part in Uttarayan in residential societies.
He will also attend an online meeting of the Somnath Trust which will also be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP leader Advani.
Amit Shah & Somnath Trust
The meeting will among other things also decide who will replace Keshubhai Patel who was the chairman of the trust. The position fell vacant after the former Gujarat Chief Minister passed away.
Keshubhai was first appointed a trustee of the Somnath Trust in 1999 and five years later was elected chairman of the board of trustees. Since 2004 he continued to hold the post even after Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah became part of the board of trustees.
He was elected chairman for the 18th consecutive time at the virtual meeting of the board held on September 30, 2020.
The Somnath Trust has eight trustees, including the chairman. The Gujarat government and the Centre can nominate four trustees each on the board all of whom are appointed for a lifetime. They can however resign voluntarily or can be removed for breach of trust.
The present board now inlcudes Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, veteran BJP leader LK Advani, PK Laheri, Jivan Parmar, a retired professor of Sanskrit and businessman Harshavardhan Neotia of Ambuja Neotia Group.
