Two sub-adult lions allegedly attacked and killed a 17-year-old girl in Dhanfuliya village of Vanthali taluka of Junagadh district. Local media reports said the girl had stepped outside her house to answer nature’s call on Monday night when the attack happened.
Media reports quoted officials as stating that the lions charged at two teenagers, Bhavna Bamaniya (17) and her cousin sister Rekha. The incident happened at 9.30 pm on Monday.
Officials said Rekha jumped into a nearby water tank but Bhavna was caught by the sub-adult lion. She was killed, and the wild cat partially ate her body.
Officials said Rekha raised an alarm and villagers and staff tried to rescue Bhavna but failed eventually they managed to recover the body.
The village is close to the Girnar Wildlife Sanctuary which also hosts several lions. Lions have been living outside the protected areas too.
The victim originally belongs to Dahod and had come to live with her maternal uncle’s family to work in the fields.
Other lion attacks
In February, a five-year-old boy Kishor Parmar was killed after being attacked by a lioness in Uchaiya village of Rajula taluka in Amreli district.
The boy, son of an agricultural labourer, was asleep in an open area bordering the agricultural field when he was attacked.
In December 2019, a 55-year-old man was mauled to death by a lion in Amreli district. The lion attacked Kadubhai Bhilad when he went to attend nature’s call near his house in Jira village under Dalkhaniya range of Gir forest division.
In June this year the Gujarat Forest Department said that the population of Asiatic lions in the state had touched 674 from the 523 recorded five years ago. The count in 2020 was based on a population “observation” exercise called Poonam Avlokan and not Census.
