Former Gujarat Chief Minister and veteran BJP leader Keshubhai Patel passed away on Thursday at Sterling Hospital in the city. He was admitted to the hospital after complaining of breathlessness.
Media reports quoted hospital authorities as saying that Keshubhai Patel had suffered a cardiac arrest. Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani expressed his condolence over the passing away of the veteran leader.
What ailed Keshubhai Patel
Media quoted his son Bharat Shah who confirmed the death of his father. Bharat said his father had recovered from COVID-19 but it had severely impacted his death. He said his father also suffered from prostate cancer.
The veteran leader had tested positive for COVID-19 on September 18 but was discharged after 10 days as he tested negative.
The 92-year-old also served as the chairman of the Somnath Trust and was the first BJP chief minister of the state in 1995. He was associated with the RSS before being part of BJP. He soon lost to a coup by Shankersinh Vaghela but again came back to power in 1998 as the chief minister of the state.
He was the chief minister until 2001 but had faced severe criticism of the handling of the 2001 earthquake in Gujarat.
He later resigned from the party in 2012 to launch a new political outfit named ‘Gujarat Parivartan Party’ to contest the polls against then chief minister Narendra Modi. He was elected from Visavadar seat in 2012 but resigned in 2014 due to ill health. He had been an MLA six times.
Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil paid his condolences and said “My sincere and deepest condolences to the family and well-wishers of former #Gujarat chief minister #KeshubhaiPatel . He was an extraordinary politician with great values. #respect #RIP. We lost him to #coronavirus few minutes back.
