Behrampura corporator Kamla Chavda has been appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
Kamla Chavda, a Dalit leader is also the first from the community to be appointed as the Leader Of Opposition in the AMC. She is also the first female Leader of Opposition in the civic body.
How Kamla Chavda got the post
Former Leader of Opposition Dinesh Sharma had put in his papers after several party leaders opposed him and sought his removal. Sharma had to resign from his post before his term could come to an end due to internal bickerings in the Congress.
Sharma had while tendering his resignation stated that he was doing so for personal reasons. However, sources in the know said that two Congress MLAs Himmatsinh Patel and Shailesh Parmar had also demanded his resignation.
After Dinesh Sharma’s resignation, Gujarat Exclusive had in a story said that three people were in the race for the post. Behrampura corporator Kamla Chavda, Amraiwadi corporator Baddev Desai and Viratnagar corporator Ranjitsinh Barad. It seems Chavda trumped the others.
