Kalol blast and building collapse: Two dead, four injured


Two people died and four others were injured after an underground pipe blast in Kalol in Gandhinagar. The details of those who died are not yet known.

Two buildings collapsed due to the incident sending locals into a panic.

News agency ANI quoted Abhay Chudasama, the IG of police, Gandhinagar Range as saying that prima facie two houses collapsed after a pipeline exploded due to gas leakage. He said experts have been called to verify it.

Initial reports said it was a gas pipeline that belonged to ONGC but the company in a statement said the pipeline does not belong to it.

Local said so severe was the blast that it resulted in the windows of nearby complexes getting shattered.

ONGC says Kalol blast was not in its pipelines

The company in a statement said the gas leakage took place at around 9.30 am resulting in a blast in the pipeline in a residential area. It said the incident occurred close to ONGC’s Kalol field but the pipeline, where the accident took place, does not belong to ONGC.

The company said ONGC fire tenders have been rushed to the spot and ONGC, Crisis Management Team has been instructed to be on standby for any kind of exigency and support.

Fire experts from ONGC and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) were rushed to the spot for investigation into the possible cause of the blast.

Local Congress MLA Baldevji Thakor rushed to the spot after getting information about the incident. Home Minister Amit Shah has also sought report on the incident from the local administration. He has also expressed condolence over the loss of lives.
