Justice GR Udhwani of Gujarat HC succumbs to COVID-19


Gujarat High Court Justice GR Udhwani on Saturday passed away while under treatment for COVID-19 in Ahmedabad. He was  59.

Justice GR Udhwani was admitted to SAL Hospital due to COVID-19 infection. Three judges of the Gujarat High Court had last month tested positive for COVID-19. 

Earlier on October 7, former acting Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court – Justice Anant Dave – passed away after a prolonged illness.

Justice GR Udhwani had served as the registrar general of Gujarat High Court from 2011 to 2012. He completed his LLB from LA Law College in 1986 and started his practice as a lawyer in 1987.

He was appointed as Judge in Ahmedabad City Civil Sessions Court in 1997 and was elevated as the judge of Gujarat High Court in 2004.

COVID-19 in Gujarat high court

Earlier, in the last few months several employees of different departments of the high court had tested positive, due to which administrative work at the court was suspended for a limited time.

The entire court premises was also sanitized by the AMC. The administrative work of Gujarat high court was suspended three times during the last eight months.

The court has said that a decision on physical hearing will be taken in a meeting on December 20. A tentative date of January 4, 2021 was announced for reopening of physical hearing but it is subject to the court’s directions. 

Gujarat High Court on October 26 announced live streaming of video conferencing through youtube on experimental basis. Gujarat High Court was the first in the country to live stream its video conferencing hearing. 

Almost all matters are heard through video conferencing in Gujarat High Court since the imposition of lockdown in March up till now.
