A street dog who was befriended by a Jain Sadhvi during her stay in Surat made it a point to accompany her during the final journey. He not only accompanied the palkhi (the palanquin carrying her mortal remains) but also stayed put while her body was cremated.
It emerged that the Jain Sadhvi in Surat’s Vesu area used to feed the dog. When the mourners first saw the dog they shooed it away but it returned walking under the palanquin. It walked 5 km to the crematorium and waited until the body was consigned to the flames. Not only that it then accompanied others back to the area where it lived.
Media reports said the dog lived around the Vesu area where Piyush Varsha Sadhvi Maharaj used to live in one Rameshwaram Apartment. She had been living there for some years and used to feed the dog.
When she passed away, the devotees readied her mortal remains for the final journey and the dog started walking beside the Palkhi.
The people shooed it away but it returned. What is interesting is that the dog never created any commotion while being shooed away and then continued to walk under the palkhi for the 5 km journey to the crematorium.
He stayed until the body was cremated and later returned to the Vesu area.
