India reports close to 14,000 new COVID cases, the highest in over 20 days

The country saw 13,993 new COVID cases in the last 24 hours and 101 fatalities due to the disease during the same period. This is the first time that the number of per-day cases has touched almost 14,000 in close to 23 days.

The total number of COVID cases in the country now stands at 10,977,387 while the fatality figure is 156,212. Of the total deaths reported in the last 24 hours, 44 were in Maharashtra, 15 from Kerala, and eight from Punjab.

Maharashtra has the highest number of deaths at 51,713 followed by Tamil Nadu (12,451) Karnataka (12,287 ), Delhi (10,897 ) West Bengal (10,242) Uttar Pradesh (8,712), and Andhra Pradesh (7,167).

The country’s active caseload that had been on the decline earlier rose to 143,127 which is 1.27% of the total cases reported so far.

So far 10,678,048 patients have recovered from the disease and the country has a recovery rate of 97.27%. The fatality rate stands at 1.42%. 21,02,61,480 samples were tested for COVID so far with 7,86,618 samples tested on Friday.

COVID vaccination status

Since the COVID vaccination began in the country on January 16, 10,715,204 have received at least one dose of the vaccine. The health ministry data said 10,449,942 vaccine doses were administered by Friday evening including 62,95,903 health care workers, who got the first jab.

756,942 health care workers have so far got the second jab of the vaccine. 33,97,097 frontline workers have been given the first dose of the vaccine so far.

Thirty-four people have died after receiving the vaccine while 41 were hospitalized. The health ministry said none of the deaths however could be attributed to the vaccine. Of the 34 deaths reported due to vaccination, 13 were reported from hospitals while the rest were outside the hospital.
