Dhari, a stronghold of Patels, chose BJP candidate JV Kakadia as its MLA in the bypolls, the results of which were announced on Tuesday.

BJP won all the eight seats that saw bypolls. JV Kakadia of the BJP polled 49,695 votes against Congress’ Surest Kotadiya who got 32,592 votes. NOTA got 2,357 votes.

Despite his victory, JV Kakadia’s victory margin from Dhari dipped from 18,336 in 2017 to 17,209 in 2020. In 2017, Kakadia, then a Congress candidate had defeated BJP’s Dilip Sanghani. Kakadia had later resigned from Congress and joined the BJP and the buzz was that the voters were angry with his defection.

The results, however, showed that Kakadia remained popular among the voters. Congress has won the seat five times while BJP has won it four times. The seat was one by the Parivartan Party once.
