The state government has submitted before the Gujarat High Court that they have not received any request from railways to ply eight intercity trains used by commuters for employment/occupation in the state.

The state told the court that they have not denied permission to run the said trains and that as and when such request is sent by the railways, the same would be adequately considered.

The advocate appearing for the railways sought time to take instruction from the railway authorities. The matter is likely to be heard on January 29.

What is the case involving trains and railways?

A PIL filed through advocate Anand Yagnik said that other states including Maharashtra, which has a higher number of COVID patients than Gujarat, have initiated rail service in the interest of people.

But that is not the case in Gujarat. The PIL said the intercity rail travel is used by many people as it is a cheaper option compared to Ola, Uber, and other private transport services.

The pass holders said that whenever they have made a representation to various authorities to resume the service, they have assured that they will strictly follow and implement social distancing norms. They have urged that the eight intercity trains should be started in the state at the earliest.

The petition further said that lakhs of people spend almost 1/3rd their lives in trains as they commute daily. The monthly pass is a huge boon for such people as it enables them to save both time and money, the PIL said.
