Civic body polls: In AMC’s Gota ward, Congress comes up with a namesake to take on BJP

Lakshmi Patel, Ahmedabad: What is in a name, you may say? Well, it can lead to a lot of confusion and the Congress plans to create some. In what is seen as its response to the poaching of its workers and leaders, the party has put up candidates who have similar names as BJP’s candidates. This is likely to create confusion in the minds of the voters.

The Congress has used this strategy of namesake candidates as the BJP in the Gota ward. The Congress has so far announced candidates’ names for 10 of the 48 wars of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation elections. Gota ward has candidates who have the same name and surname. Congress has put up Dinesh Desai as one of the candidates for the panel while BJP’s sitting corporator from the ward is also named Dinesh Desai.

He is more or less likely to get a ticket from the BJP for the ward. In the year 2015, Congress had given a ticket to one Amrut Desai from the ward and he had polled 11,538 votes while BJP’s then-candidate Dinesh Desai got 17,846 votes. BJP had won all four seats in the ward.
