Twenty three relatives of the people who died in the 2002 Godhra Sabarmati train carnage were paid an additional compensation of Rs4.85 lakh by the Railway department on Wednesday. The compensation was paid as per a judgment of the Gujarat High Court in 2017.
The state government had paid Rs5 lakh as compensation to the relatives of the deceased in 2019, whereas the Railways has now paid financial assistance of Rs4.85 lakh to the 23 people who are relatives of the deceased.
The Railways had initially paid Rs15, to the kin of the deceased immediately after the incident in 2002. In 2017, the Gujarat High Court had directed the state government and railways to pay additional compensation of Rs10 lakh to each of the relatives of the deceased in the Godhra train carnage.

Speaking to Gujarat Exclusive Bipin Thakkar, who lost two of his family members in the Godhra train carnage, said the financial assistance will help the relatives who have lost their loved ones. He however said true justice would have been done if the culprits are hanged to death. The matter is pending before the Supreme Court.
He further said that they were helped by lawyer Dipak Shukla who had not taken any fee from them during the entire proceeding in court. In all the kith and kin of all the 42 people who died in the Godhra train carnage will get additional compensation.
Earlier in 2018 Gujarat High Court had sentenced the accused Faruk Bhana and Imran Sheru for their involvement in the Godhra train carnage. The train returning from Ayodhya with karsevaks was allegedly set afire by a mob killing 59 karsevaks.
