Gujarat all set for 2nd day of dry run for COVID vaccine


The state health department on Monday said that it will carry out a dry run mocks drill of the COVID vaccination on December 28 and 29. The dry run will be carried out in Gandhinagar and Rajkot. The health department said that four states were chosen for the dry run – Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, and Assam.

The department said the vaccines will be made available in a short period and it has made all the arrangements to vaccinate people. The department has formed a special task force of experts – Dr. Navin Thakkar, head of the pediatric association in the state, Dr. Nischal Bhatt pediatrician, Dr. Sapan Pandya, Immunologist, and Dr. Bhadresh Vyas, HOD of the Jamnagar Guru Govind College.

The department said that people will need to register in advance for the vaccination which will be given twice in 28 days. The second dose will be given 14 days after the first dose of the vaccine. It said that despite vaccination, everyone will have to continue with the COVID protocols.

Preparation for COVID vaccine and dry run

So far 16,000 vaccinators have been trained and one vaccination center can vaccinate 100 people in a day. The department said it can vaccinate up to 16 lakh people per day.

“In Gujarat, the dry run is being carried out in Rajkot district, Rajkot city, Gandhinagar district, and Gandhinagar city,” State Immunisation Office Dr. Nayan Jani told reporters.

He said local health officials of these districts and cities will engage in administrative work on the first day of the drive.

“The actual field visits will begin on Tuesday,” Jani said, adding that actual (potential) vaccine shots will not be administered on people during the dry run.

The department said 25 beneficiaries in each session site have been identified and so far 475 such beneficiaries have been identified.

In India, two COVID vaccines are in the phase 2 trials while three are in the final stages of the trial.
As for vaccine storage, the state has made arrangements for six vaccine stores in the zone level, 41 at the district and corporation level, and 2,189 cold chain points.

Beneficiaries of COVID vaccine 

So far the government has data of 4.31 lakh health workers, 6.31 lakh frontline workers, and 1.3 crore people above the age of 50. Around 2.68 lakh people who are below 50 years of age but suffer from serious ailments have also been identified.
