A Dalit was allegedly beaten up by 11 people for sporting a long moustache in Viramgam taluka. As per a complaint by Suresh Vaghela (22), men from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) group who call themselves Rajputs, attacked him for sporting a mustache.

Police said the youth is under treatment at a hospital and so far three people have been arrested in the incident.

The complaint accuses one Dhama Thakor and others of attacking him. They allegedly gathered outside his house in Karathkal village and began to first hurl abuses at him because he kept a moustache. They later attacked him with sticks.

May month o 2019 alone saw six such incidents. In March this year, Dalit rights activist Amrabhai Boricha, 50, was attacked and killed in Bhavnagar district for not withdrawing a complaint against dominant caste men.

Amrabhai had filed a complaint under SC/ST Act against three dominant caste men in 2013 for abusing him while he was passing by their house. The men were later released on bail and had been pressuring him to withdraw his case.

The men attacked Boricha with stones, pipes, and rods. His daughter too was injured in the incident.

In October 2020 a Dalit lawyer-activist was hacked to death by dominant caste men for a Facebook post. In 2019 a Dalit youth was killed by his dominant-caste in-laws when he sought police help in getting his wife returned from her home.
