The COVID surge across Gujarat is leading to a scary situation. Long queues are being reported at crematoriums in Surat to cremate those who succumbed to COVID. A long line of bodies awaiting cremation was witnessed at Surat’s Umra crematorium, a video of which went viral.
On average, Surat city is witnessing 240 deaths every day, the report said. Many bodies were later moved to the Bardoli crematorium to help ease the burden on the Umra crematorium.
Reports said in some instances the waiting to cremate the dead was as long as 10 hours.
COVID beds in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad is running short of ventilators for COVID patients. Though the AMC approved new private hospitals that have to reserve their beds for COVID patients, only 39 beds with ventilator have been added in the last two days.
Two private hospitals are on the verge of being full and in 50 hospitals beds are no more available. In private hospitals, only 648 beds in all are vacant as per the data on April 8.
243 ICU With ventilator beds is full while 54 remain empty. In ICU 85 beds are empty. If cases continue to rise these beds will soon be filled up.
Meanwhile, there is a waiting at crematoriums in Ahmedabad as well as for ambulances to ferry the dead. The waiting time for 108 ambulances has increased to three hours due to a surge in cases.
Nitin Patel on COVID lockdown
Meanwhile, health minister Nitin Patel has as of now ruled down lockdown in the state. He said that the state will continue with the new curfew timings and is putting in place other restrictions including closing down of schools. He said public gatherings have been banned and masks have been made mandatory.
