Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has decided to let several businesses that were asked to shut shop due to COVID restrictions function from 9 am to 3 pm.

Shops in the 36 cities where restrictions were imposed will be allowed to remain open from 9 am to 3 pm from tomorrow onwards. Restaurants, beauty parlours, laaris and others will also be allowed to operate during the limited period. The curfew in 36 cities will continue to be in place upto May 27.

The decision was taken in a core committing meeting held on Thursday. The new relaxation in the rule will be valid up to May 27.

COVID restrictions history

The Gujarat government had on May 17 announced that the night curfew in place in 36 towns and cities of Gujarat including the 8 municipal corporations will continue up to May 20.
The curfew was to come to an end on May 18 and the state was to announce a decision on whether to ease the restrictions or lift the curfew altogether.
The decision has been taken given the COVID situation and the fact that the state was bracing for cyclone Tauktae. Although the number of COVID cases in the state has steadily come down, the government extended the curfew for up to May 20.
The curfew was in place from 8 pm to 6 am.
The Gujarat government had on May 11 announced that the night curfew in place in 36 cities of the state will be extended for another week ending on May 18.
The Gujarat government had on May 4 announced an extension of the curfew in 36 towns and cities of Gujarat. The curfew was to be valid from 8 pm to 6 am. The government had initially put the eight municipal corporations under curfew and later extended it to 29 towns and cities.
But later it extended to cover Deesa, Ankleshwar, Vapi, Modasa, Radhanpur, Kadi, and Visnagar among others. Thus, all 36 towns and cities are now under curfew in the state.
The earlier curfew was valid from May 6 to May 12. A core committee meeting chaired by Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani had at that time taken the decision. The committee decided that all activities and services associated with COVID 19 like hospitals, pharmacies, oxygen supply plants, and such will continue to function.
