The state on Friday said Gujarat will soon start production of a drug substance used for the manufacturing of COVAXIN, the India-made COVID vaccine.

The state said given the COVID situation it had become imperative to accelerate the production of the COVID vaccine and hence production needed to be expanded through contract manufacturing.

Considering this, the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre(GBRC), an autonomous society established under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat, along with Hester Bioscience Ltd. and Omni BRx Technologies entered into an MoU with Bharat Biotech Ltd. for contract manufacturing of a drug substance for COVAXIN.

If everything goes as per the plan, bulk production of this drug substance equivalent to 20 million doses per month will begin from August 2021 in Gujarat. This will then be supplied to Bharat Biotech Ltd. for the production of the vaccine.

GBRC will act as a mentor, advisor, and facilitator for the technology transfer from BBIL. HBL will build the BSL3 facility for manufacturing the drug ingredient for COVAXIN and shall obtain necessary regulatory approvals whereas Omni BRx will act as a technology support partner.

COVAXIN in Gujarat

The agreement will help enhance bulk drug substance production in Gujarat and will allow BBIL to produce more doses of COVID vaccine.

The state said though at present no financial support is being provided by the government of Gujarat, it will at a suitable time enter into a buy-back agreement with BBIL for COVAXIN as per the rate and policy of the Centre.

GBRC had last year signed MoU with three companies- Hester Biosciences Pvt. Ltd., Supratech Laboratory, and Vekaria Healthcare LLP to develop a COVID-19 vaccine and diagnostics.
