Court permits accused to appear for exams from jail


A local court in Ahmedabad has permitted a 19-year-old accused, who was arrested in a suicide abetment case, to appear for B.Com semester – 3 exams from jail.  The court directed the jail authorities to provide books and study material to the accused – Mihir Rathod- through his advocate.

The interim bail of the accused to appear for the exams was rejected by the court. Later he sought to appear for the remaining two papers from jail. The court ordered the accused to deposit the necessary expenses with jail authorities so that they may provide an escort to the accused for his exams on January 13 and 16 between 9 am to 1 pm.

The accused had moved an application seeking interim bail till January 17 to appear for his exams after he missed two papers due to his arrest on January 10. The exams began on January 7.

What is the case against the accused in the court?

The 19-year-old is accused of harassing a minor girl who used to study with him in school. According to the FIR lodged against the accused with Naroda Police Station, he allegedly threatened to tell the minor girl’s parents several things about their relationship. He is also accused of threatening to harass the girl by revealing their Whatsapp chat.

The victim had talked about the harassment to one of her friends before committing suicide. The girl hanged herself from a ceiling fan in her room on December 8, last year.

Based on the statement of the victim’s friend and Whatsapp chat between the accused and the victim an FIR was registered by the girl’s parents against the accused under section 306 of IPC (abetment for suicide).
