Gujarat Women Congress’ vice-president Sonal Patel has alleged that candidature for the upcoming civic body polls in the city was sold for lakhs of rupees.
She alleged that Congress MLAs took Rs20 lakh for each ticket to sell them to the highest bidder. She has resigned from her post citing insult.
Patel has alleged that the Indira Colony panel announced by the party was done after the seats were sold to the candidates for Rs20 lakh each.
On January 24, she said she got a call asking about her readiness for the polls, and then it emerged that the mandate was given to someone else. She said it was not right for her to continue after such an insult.
She alleged that BJP deserters were being given tickets in return for money. She has accused Bapunagar MLA Himmatsinh Patel and Danilimta MLA Shailesh Parmar of selling tickets. She challenged them to try to take out a rally in Indira Colony.
Congress faces protest
The Gujarat Congress has seen a slew of protests and allegations after it announced the names of candidates for the civic body polls.
Fearing protests, Congress did not release a list of candidates and personally informed them instead. Many NSUI workers who did not get a ticket also began protests outside the Congress office in the city. They have accused Imran Khedawala and Gyasuddin Sheikh of being biased in ticket distribution. Around 750 NSUI candidates have reportedly resigned from the party.
Imran Khedawala also resigned from the party over its decision not to give tickets to his workers. Abuses were also scribbled outside the Gujarat Congress’ office in Ahmedabad after the names of candidates for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation elections were announced.
