Leader of Opposition in the Gujarat Assembly Paresh Dhanani and Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Chavda has reportedly resigned following the party’s debacle in the recently held bypolls for eight seats in Gujarat.
After the party failed to win the eight seats, all of which belonged to the Congress before the respective MLAs resigned, questions were being raised about the leadership of the party in Gujarat.
Dhanani who spoke after resigning from the post said he had offered to resign after the debacle in the bypolls.
“I take moral responsibility for the party’s performance in the bypolls. I have offered to resign. I will abide by whatever decision the high command takes,” said Dhanani.
With Dhanani reportedly putting in his papers the name of Shailesh Parmar, Punja Vansh, and Ashwin Kotwal as the possible leader of Opposition is doing the rounds. Arjun Modhwadia and Jagdish Thakore could probably replace Amit Chavda as GPCC chief if the resignation is accepted.
Meanwhile, Congress’ Gujarat in-charge Rajiv Satav is in the state for the last many days to prepare a report on the party’s poor performance in the bypolls.
Bypolls and Congress performance
The BJP won all the eight seats which saw bypolls in Gujarat. The seats were left vacant after Congress MLAs who won the seat in the 2017 assembly elections resigned from the party ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls.
Five of these MLAs joined the BJP and contested on the same seats from which they had resigned. BJP won Dangs with the highest lead while in Morbi it got away with a slim one.
