Congress list so far
Congress declared its first list of candidates for five municipal corporations on February 2. It has announced 53 candidates for Surat Municipal Corporation, 27 candidates for Jamnagar Municipal Corporation, 22 candidates for Rajkot Municipal Corporation, and 20 candidates for Vadodara Municipal Corporation.
The list of candidates for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is likely to be announced soon.
The party leadership held a series of marathon meetings to select candidates for the local body elections, especially when AIMIM and AAP are also going to contest the polls. The entry of AIMIM in Gujarat politics has also rattled the Congress leadership as it fears a division of Muslim votes that will further made winning polls an uphill task for the party. Also, several Congress workers have ditched the party to join AIMIM—an indication that all is not well in the grand old party.
For the six municipal corporations where elections are due, the process of accepting nomination forms has already begun from February 1 and forms will be accepted till February 6. The scrutiny of the forms will be done on February 8, whereas candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nomination by February 9.
