Clashes between two groups were reported from Navabandar in Una, an hour after DGP Ashish Bhatia visited the taluka. Four cops including the assistant superintendent of police (ASP) were injured. Ten civilians were also hurt in the incident. Police from the Gir-Somnath district rushed to the spot to control the violence.
The clash began over a quarrel over the collision of boats in Navabandar which soon turned violent. People gathered and began to attack each other on Sunday. Close to 2,000 people belonging to two communities allegedly hit each other with sticks, swords, iron rods, and other weapons and hurled stones and empty glass bottles at each other.
Police rushed to the spot to control the situation and found themselves under attack. An ASI Omprakash Jat, PSI HV Chudasama, and two other cops Raju Gadhvi and Prakash Chavda were injured. ASP Rahul Tripathi was injured when a stone hit him on the leg.
Police had to fire several rounds in the air and lob tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Ten civilians were also injured in the incident. Following the incident, security was upped in the area. A complaint has also been registered.
Police have registered an FIR against nearly 2,000 unidentified people for an attempt to murder and rioting. The FIR also names 47 other persons for similar offenses in connection with the incident that took place on Sunday, he said.
Following the clash, a large police team comprising personnel from three nearby police stations at Una, Gir Gadhada, and Kodinar, as well as from the local crime branch and special operations group had rushed to control the mob, he said.
