Civic body polls: Clashes in Viramgam, attempt at booth capturing in Dahod


Clashes between two groups were reported from a polling booth in Viramgam during the second phase of civic body polls. Clash erupted at MG High School Polling booth in Viramgam during pollsing . The clash was between BJP workers and an Independent candidate’s supporters. Police soon intervened but one person was reportedly injured in the clash.

It was reported that MLA Lakha Bharwad’s men were the one who allegedly started the fight. Bogus voting also reportedly took place, locals have alleged.

Meanwhile, in Dahod district’s Jhalod taluka an incident of EVM machine being smashed has been reported. This happened after an alelged attempt at booth capturing by two to three people. Police rushed to the spot and arrested one person. Polling has been stopped at the booth.

Complaints of EVM malfunctioning were also reported from Dahod’s Himala, Limkheda, Kundha, Fatehpura and Nani Thadeli among other polling booths.

Bogus voting during polls

In Chhota Udepur a complaint of bogus voting was received from Rayanghoda polling booth in the district’s Naswadi area. A voter Tiniben Bhil who went to cast her vote was told that someone else had already cast her vote. She later filed a complaint of bogus voting.

In the second phase of local body polls in Gujarat, voting is going on for 81 municipalities, 31 district panchayats, and 231 taluka panchayats on Sunday. Since the morning, people have been queuing outside polling stations and are exercising their franchise under the COVID-19 guidelines. The counting of votes will be held on March 2.
