The Gujarat High Court has issued notice and sought a reply from the State Election Commission in a petition seeking to quash the order of State Election Commission which asked the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) employees to join in election duty.
Advocate Maulik Shelat told Gujarat Exclusive that LIC employees are statutory corporation employees and they can’t be called for election duty for civic body elections in the state. The SEC has asked LIC employees across the state to join election duty for civic body polls in the state.
The SEC doesn’t have powers to call LIC employees for election duty for civic body elections. LIC employees are not State Government employees but employees of a statutory corporation, he said. The court directed the SEC to file a reply on February 17 in the matter. The matter is likely to be heard on Wednesday.
