Civic body polls: Guidelines issued on campaigning during COVID times

The State Election Commission (SEC) has issued certain guidelines for the upcoming civic body polls scheduled in February. The guidelines have been given taking into consideration the COVID situation in the state.

As per the guidelines, only 5 people will be allowed during the door-door campaign for the civic body polls. The SEC has urged candidates to carry out digital campaigning whenever possible. Social distancing and mask rules will also have to be followed during the campaigning.

If a candidate tests positive for COVID he/she has to mandatorily undertake only digital campaigning. Nodal officers have also been appointed to ensure that the COVID guidelines are followed.

Civic body polls in Gujarat

The local body elections or civic body polls in Gujarat are scheduled to be held in two phases. In the first phase of the civic body elections on February 21, polls will be held for municipal corporations. The results for the same will be declared on February 23. The last date for filling candidature is February 6 while the last date for withdrawal of nomination in the civic body polls is February 8.

The second phase of civic body polls will be held on February 28 and will cover nagarpalikas, district panchayats, and taluka panchayats. The results of the same will be declared on March 2.

Elections to six municipal corporations, including Ahmedabad, 55 municipalities, 31 district panchayats, and 231 taluka panchayats were supposed to be held in November 2019. The polls were postponed by three months given the COVID-19 pandemic.
